The KUPRECOMP Journey: A Story of Unity and Resilience

In the bustling streets of Nairobi, where ideas spark and reputations are built and broken daily, a group of passionate Public Relations and Communications professionals came together with a shared conviction. For too long, Kenyan PR practitioners had operated in the shadows—talented voices shaping narratives for organizations, governments, and brands, yet without a unified platform to champion their own labour rights. From this need, KUPRECOMP was born—the Kenya Union of Public Relations and Communications Professionals.

Our journey has not been easy. It has been shaped by skepticism, bureaucratic hurdles, and the familiar resistance that often greets any movement seeking to challenge the status quo. Many questioned whether PR professionals truly needed a union. After all, weren’t we the ones who made everything look seamless? But beneath the polished press releases and strategic campaigns were real and persistent challenges: unfair contracts, long and unreasonable working hours, inadequate remuneration, and limited collective bargaining power.

We founded KUPRECOMP on a firm belief rooted in the Constitution of Kenya. Article 41 on Labour Relations affirms that every person has the right to fair labour practices. It guarantees workers the right to fair remuneration, reasonable working conditions, and the freedom to form, join, or participate in trade union activities, including the right to strike when necessary. For many in our profession, these rights had remained theoretical for too long. KUPRECOMP was created to transform them into lived reality.

Our Objectives

At its core, KUPRECOMP exists to advocate for the labour rights and welfare of all Public Relations and Communications professionals across Kenya. It seeks to promote fair employment practices, uphold ethical standards, and encourage continuous professional development within the industry. The union also provides a strong collective voice in negotiations with employers and policymakers, ensuring members are heard and protected.

In addition, KUPRECOMP is committed to building a supportive professional network that uplifts members through capacity building, mentorship, and resource sharing. Above all, it works to ensure that the PR profession is recognized and valued for the critical role it plays in nation-building, institutional reputation, and organizational success.

The Power of Togetherness

Togetherness, for us, is more than a concept—it is our strength. It means standing shoulder to shoulder whether one is a seasoned consultant in Mombasa, a rising communications professional in Bungoma, or a corporate communicator in Nairobi. It is the understanding that while one voice may be ignored, a united front commands attention and respect.

In togetherness, we share knowledge, amplify each other’s successes, and support one another through challenges. It is the spirit that reminds us: your struggle is mine, and your victory lifts us all.

From humble beginnings, KUPRECOMP has steadily taken root. We have established a strong presence in Nairobi, the heartbeat of the industry, with growing branches in Bungoma and Mombasa, and more counties on the horizon. The union continues to expand as more professionals recognize the power and protection that comes with collective representation.

One of the most practical expressions of our togetherness is our welfare programme. Life’s uncertainties affect everyone. When a member experiences bereavement, the union responds swiftly by providing an immediate support contribution of Ksh 20,000 to help the family during those difficult early moments. This support goes beyond financial assistance—it is a message that no member stands alone.

The road ahead is filled with both promise and responsibility. As we expand our reach, strengthen our advocacy, and deepen our impact, we call upon every Public Relations and Communications professional in Kenya to join us. Whether in consulting, corporate, government, or freelance practice, there is a place for you in this movement.

KUPRECOMP is not just a union. It is a movement, a family, and a promise that those who shape Kenya’s stories will also have a voice in shaping their own working lives.

Together we rise. Together we negotiate. Together we thrive.

Karibu KUPRECOMP – Unity is our Power.
